How We Calculate Hiking Calories
Our calorie calculator for hiking uses scientifically validated methods to estimate your energy expenditure. The calculation is based on MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values, which represent the energy cost of physical activities.
Primary Formula
The core calculation uses the MET-based formula:
Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours)
For more precise minute-by-minute calculations, we use:
Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × 0.0175 × Duration (minutes)
Where 0.0175 is a constant derived from the oxygen consumption of 3.5 ml/kg/min divided by 200.
Elevation Adjustment
Hiking uphill requires additional energy. We account for elevation gain with:
Extra Calories = Elevation Gain (meters) × 0.09 × Weight Factor
Example Calculation
For a 70 kg person hiking for 2 hours with 500 meters of elevation gain:
- Base calories (MET 6): 6 × 70 × 2 = 840 kcal
- Elevation calories: 500 × 0.09 = 45 kcal
- Total: 885 kcal

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this calorie estimate?
Estimates are approximate — based on MET values and elevation adjustment. Individual metabolic rates vary based on fitness level, body composition, and other factors.
Should I use kg or lb?
You can use either; the calculator will convert units automatically. The calculation is performed using metric units internally for accuracy.
Does this account for backpacks or gear?
You can add estimated extra weight to account for packs — it will increase calorie estimates. Simply include the weight of your gear in your total weight input.
Can I download or share my results?
Yes — export as CSV or PDF using the buttons in the report area. The exported files include all your inputs and the detailed breakdown of results.
Is this a medical or legal tool?
No. Use these calculations as an informational baseline only; consult professionals for medical or legal decisions. This tool is designed for recreational planning purposes.
