How GPA Calculation Works
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. Understanding how it's calculated can help you track your progress and set academic goals.
GPA Calculation Formula
The semester GPA is calculated using this formula:
GPA = Σ(Credit Hours × Grade Points) / Σ(Credit Hours)
Example Calculation:
- Mathematics: 3 credits × A (4.0) = 12.0 points
- English: 4 credits × B+ (3.3) = 13.2 points
- Science: 2 credits × B (3.0) = 6.0 points
Total Grade Points = 12.0 + 13.2 + 6.0 = 31.2
Total Credits = 3 + 4 + 2 = 9
GPA = 31.2 / 9 = 3.47
Understanding Grade Points
Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale where:
- A = 4.0 points
- B = 3.0 points
- C = 2.0 points
- D = 1.0 point
- F = 0.0 points
Some institutions use plus/minus grading with intermediate values like A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), etc.
